Jakob
Smith, 5, a student at United Martial Arts on North Main Street in London has been awarded the Student of the Month.
Smith trains in the Little Ninjas program, a preschool martial arts curriculum for ages 3-6 that develops discipline, teamwork,
focus, balance, coordination and basic martial arts skills.
When asked why he became a martial artist, Smith responded:
“Because I think learning self-defense is cool. I like practicing punching and jabbing techniques.”
“Jacob
is well-behaved and always tries hard,” commented Instructor Jeremy Patton. “When the kids get a little rowdy,
I can point to Jakob and use him as an example of how they’re supposed to act. Sometimes that’s enough to straighten
them up,” Patton said with a smile.
“I think Jacob has been training with us well over a year and he’ll
soon be ready for placement in one our regular classes,” Patton added.
“Preschoolers have different needs
than older kids and keeping them in their own class allows us to cater to those needs.”
Smith is the son
of Al and Monica Smith of London.
