FOR RELEASE: IMMEDIATE 2/8/06
Five members from United
Martial Arts Academy, located on North Main Street in London placed at the American Karate and Jiu-Jitsu Nationals held in
Columbus, Ohio.
Scott Hope, Sandy Bickish and Dameon Roberts earned
gold medals in the Jiu-jitsu competition and were named AKJU National Champions. John Porter and Michael Ball won runner-up
status, receiving silver medals.
In Jiu-jitsu no strikes are permitted,
which allows competitors to focus entirely on grappling strategy. Rules vary from one organization to another, but most Jiu-jitsu
competitions can be won by tap-out or decision. If the time limit is reached, judges render a decision by awarding points
for throws, ground control and submission attempts.
“The outstanding
results of this competition highlight the good technique that Scott Hope is teaching in his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes,”
commented UMA owner Jeremy Patton. “We teach basic grappling in all our programs and we’re confident that our
students are learning the skills necessary for competition or self-defense.”
“I’m proud of our performance and the effort everyone is putting forth,” said Hope. “We’re
looking forward to the next competition.”
