United Martial Arts Academy, located on North Main Street in London, recently held its Annual Awards Banquet at David’s Restaurant in Corbin. More than 150 students, friends and family attended the event.

“This year’s banquet was extra special because it included a black belt ceremony,” said Instructor Jeremy Patton. “Trey Hallman tested for his black belt this morning and everyone was excited when they learned that he attained the rank he’s worked so hard for.”

Hallman’s black belt test was conducted during a school-wide belt exam and all passing students received their ranks at the banquet.

“I would like to thank our judges at the belt exam: John Galluzzo, Calvin Wells, Robert Floyd and Danielle Newman,” Patton added. “I would also like to thank David’s Restaurant for their excellent food and service.”

Scores of students received recognition during the festivities, including awards for good grades, home conduct, leadership and excellence in martial arts. Sandy Bickish and Robbie Waddle received the Student of the Year Award.

“For fairness, we present two Student of the Year awards, one for an adult and another for a child,” Patton continued. “Second only to earning a black belt, Student of the Year is the highest honor anyone can receive at our school. Sandy and Robbie are excellent martial artists and they’ve gone out of their way help our school and its students.”

“We organize events such as this every year because we want to promote a sense of belonging and friendship,” Patton said. “We don’t want people to just workout and then go home. I’ve met my closest friends in martial arts and I want to provide the same opportunity for my students.”
